Modern vintage home decor When It Alteration Finds

How to get the modern vintage decor look

Welcome to the first in a new series on modern vintage decor, covering everything from colour palettes and patterns to furniture and accessories.

So, what do I mean by modern vintage? Well, it’s a classic home decor style reflected in recent trends such as cottagecore, grand millennial style, grandma chic or English cottage. It evokes a bygone era, taking inspiration from the past in terms of colour palettes and furniture styles but updating them with clean lines and a simpler approach. It’s a fantastic way to add character to a space, while keeping it functional. Plus, a period home or a collection of antique furniture are absolutely not required.

In my recent Spring post, I highlighted the current trends toward muted pastels, pops of primary colour, scallops and ruffles. All key ingredients in modern vintage decor, together with patterned wallpaper, pleated lampshades, striped cushions and hand-painted china. Join me as we review the following key elements and check out my modern vintage series for more.

1) Colour Palette

Begin by colour drenching in warm neutrals, dusky pinks, sage greens and sky blues. Introduce pops of colour with painted furniture and vintage accessories in mustard yellow, earthy red or navy blue.

3) Furniture

Go for plush, inviting sofas and armchairs in classic shapes with scroll arms, turned wooden legs and plump cushions upholstered in natural linen or cotton blends. Add wooden display cabinets, dining tables and storage painted in muted neutrals or primary colours with scalloped trim. Thrifted pieces or family hand-me-downs are perfect for this look too.
