This week we’ve had new carpets fitted in the master and guest bedrooms which is so exciting! I can finally begin styling the final look of these two rooms. Top of my hit list was my other half’s laminate bedside table, which I’ve hated pretty much from the moment he moved in. We all have pieces like this in our homes; an inexpensive functional bit of furniture which is ugly and boring. Let the quick beside table upcycle begin!
I didn’t want to spend too much time or money on this project as hopefully it’ll be replaced in the not too distant future. I decided a bit of leftover paint and some new handles was all that was needed.
Upcycling a Bedside Table
The paint I’ve used is Rust-Oleum gloss finish furniture paint in Mineral Grey, which I had leftover from another project. I’m a big fan of Rust-Oleum products and their furniture paint in particular. They give a superb finish and can be easily applied with no sanding or priming required on most surfaces. A little goes a long way and usually only two coats are required. It’s water-based so there’s no messy clean-up and there’s generally no need to lacquer or wax after painting. However, I might seal the top in this case as it’s a high traffic area with change, keys etc.
It didn’t take long to paint the cabinet and drawer fronts. I decided to remove the feet to make them easier to paint and discovered they were plastic! I thought I might have to use a primer here but the paint adhered with no problems.
The Result
Ta da! I’m really chuffed with the result. I let my other half choose the handles from a collection I scored at a clearance sale for only 10p each.
The finished scheme for the room will be grey and mustard yellow, so this upcycled bedside table will fit in nicely. Ideally I would have changed the feet too (who knew plastic bun feet even existed?!) but I’d rather wait and spend more on buying or creating something a bit more stylish in the future.
Here it is in place next to my Orla Kiely tulip flannel bedding in mushroom and dandelion (similar here). The throw and lamp are both from Homesense.
I hope I’ve inspired you to take on your own upcycling project. I’m off to do more painting and browse the January sales final reductions for soft furnishings!
