Is an upholstered bed the new must-have bedroom feature?

I’ve spent the last few days stripping wallpaper from our second bedroom and daydreaming about the fun bit – styling our new guest room! After more than a year working on renovations the idea that we might actually be able to have friends to stay (with a proper room to put them in) is almost too exciting.

Needless to say the last few evenings have been spent on Pinterest drooling over beautiful bedrooms. We have a modest budget at this stage – just some paint, a new carpet and a not particularly attractive (but free) metal bed frame from a family friend. However, this hasn’t stopped me pinning bedroom pics like mad. My preference has always been for a wooden bed frame, but I began to notice that nearly all the bedrooms I pinned had upholstered beds. Given the ongoing trend for velvet furniture this makes perfect sense.

A full post on my new guest bedroom coming soon but in the meantime, and for your viewing pleasure, here are some of the beautiful upholstered beds I’ve come across. Some of them are even currently on sale! Maybe next year…

I mentioned Anthropologie and their collaboration with designer Bethan Gray in my recent post on the top home decor trends for 2019. For me this scalloped bed in blue green velvet is the highlight of the collection, currently sitting right at the top of my lust list. Completely different, but equally gorgeous, is this recent rustic bedroom revamp by Malmo and Moss with it’s wool and button combo. I’m totally in love with the reclaimed scaffold board feature wall too.

Scalloped velvet is definitely on trend this year and here are two more of my favourites. The Ariel upholstered bed from Sweetpea & Willow and the Delia from MADE.

According to Pinterest’s 2019 trend report searches for bold print wallpaper are up over 400%. As these inspiring bedroom makeovers from Cara Loren and Swoon Worthy prove, an upholstered bed in an accent colour makes the perfect counterpoint to a bold print.

Equally, these examples from John Lewis & Partners and Sweetpea & Willow show how, with a striking pop of colour, an upholstered bed can become the main feature of a room.

I’ve written recently that it’s time for millennial pink to grow up. We’re beginning to see it paired with darker tones such as mustard, berry and also navy, as seen in these elegant shots from Barker and Stonehouse and Love Your Home.

We’re also seeing a move towards a broader palette of warm, earthy shades. Ranging from turmeric to paprika, spice tones such as those above from Love Your Home and Sofa.com are hotting up right now.

Finally, with a careful choice of colour and shape an upholstered bed can work with many different interior styles. The playful yellow Juniper from Barker and Stonehouse provides a shot of colour in an industrial setting, while the more sombre Beatrice from Love Your Home works within a more traditional interior.
