Creating a small bathroom that is both functional and stylish can be one of the biggest challenges in any home. Whether you are planning an ensuite, guest bathroom or small master, follow these tips and tricks to maximise space.
Planning your small bathroom
The first step is to think about what you really need from your bathroom. For example, is a bath essential or do you just need a shower? Who will be using the space? For a guest bathroom a wall mounted sink might suffice, whereas a master may need the added storage of a vanity unit. Asking these important questions will help maximise space and avoid unnecessary clutter.
The Bath in Bathroom
One of the biggest steps you can take in planning a small bathroom layout is to eliminate the bath! Consider if you truly need a bath and if not opt for a shower cubicle or walk in shower instead. Using the same flooring throughout rather than a shower tray, plus a frameless shower screen, will add to a more spacious feeling.
If you need to include a bath then consider placing the shower above the bath rather than having a separate shower cubicle. This can be a good compromise to drastically reduce the required floor space.
Floating Fixtures and Wall-Mounted Storage
Where possible consider floating fixtures to increase floor space. For storage, consider any vertical space which can be utilised, including above the bath or built in to the walls. Increasing empty space at floor level will in turn create the illusion of more space overall.

Towel Rails
Rather than a traditional radiator, consider a wall mounted towel rail. This should produce enough heat for a small space and has the added function of providing a place to hang your towels.
Natural Light
Maximise natural light where possible, or use a large mirror to reflect light.
Finishing Touches
When considering your finishing touches, opt for matching accessories to create a seamless look and reduce clutter. For example, refillable bottles will blend into your scheme as opposed to branded products, which will create visual noise.
