How I’m planning for a joyful Christmas this year

Has anyone else noticed that everyone seems to be planning for Christmas even earlier than usual this year?! I was seeing brands launching their Christmas collections and peeps showing off their decorations on Insta before I’d even began to think about Halloween! Anything Christmas-related before bonfire night is a big no-no in my book and my decorations don’t usually go up until mid-December.

However, with all that’s going on in the world perhaps it’s understandable that we all want something joyful and positive to look forward to. I’ve therefore tried to reign in my inner-Scrooge and I’d like to share with you the plans I’ve been making for Christmas.

I’m dreaming of a (insert theme here) Christmas…

When it comes to my Christmas decorations I LOVE having a theme. There can be an almost bewildering choice at Christmas and I find that having a theme helps me to focus my ideas and bring everything together.

Christmas decorating ideas from When It Alteration Finds

In previous years I’ve explored Scandi, luxe, kitsch, blush, metallics… the list goes on. Just check out my mega post from a few years ago – My top 5 fabulous Christmas decorating ideas – for more.

When choosing a theme my first stop is always Pinterest. It’s my one-stop inspiration station. If you aren’t sure where to begin then just search for something like “Christmas decor ideas” and start pinning anything which appeals to you. After a while have a look through the images you’ve saved and see if any common threads emerge. Perhaps there’s lots of traditional red and green? Or lashings of fairy lights and the snowy accents of a winter wonderland? Luxurious velvets. golds and jewel-tones? Or maybe you like it kitsch with lots of glitter, pom-poms and disco balls?

White and gold Christmas mantelpiece decor

Once I’ve settled on a Christmas decor theme my next step is to edit my rather extensive collection of existing decorations, choosing what could fit. I don’t limit myself to just Christmas decorations either but candles, vases, tableware, faux greenery and my craft supplies. I might then splash out on a couple of new “hero” pieces that will really tie things together. See How I decorated my Christmas mantlepiece for more on this process.

If, unlike me, you haven’t been buying and keeping Christmas decorations for years then stores such as The Range have some great budget-friendly decorations to get you started.

My Rustic Christmas

This year I’ve decided to go rustic with a palette of neutral tones and natural textures. Think pine cones, brown paper packages, rumpled linen and wooden decorations. Plus of course some gold accents, I’m still me after all! Check out some of my favourite inspiration for this look below.

Get the Look

To get the rustic Christmas look I’ll be choosing paper and wooden decorations, natural materials such as cotton and linen, pine cones, eucalyptus and neutral tones. I do love a Christmas character, but for this look I’ll be sticking to owls and reindeer rather than penguins or flamingos. Here are some of the products I’ve got my eye on.
