I like to re-use my Christmas decorations year after year. Some date back years and have huge sentimental value. However, this doesn’t mean I can’t try new things or embrace the latest trends. Most of the decorations I’ve used to create this year’s rustic glam mantelpiece I already had. I started by selecting all the white and gold items I could find, not just Christmas decorations but candles and other bits and pieces too.
I usually add a few new decorations each year. Inspired by my gold geometric mirror found at Homesense last year, I had a clear idea of the look I wanted to achieve for my mantel – Scandi maximalism – white paper decorations paired with OTT gold accents. I choose some new mercurised gold fairy lights, also from Homesense, plus some on-trend mini gold honeycomb balls.

I included some natural elements such as eucalyptus and pine cones to add some softness to the scheme. Ideally I would have included more but I couldn’t find the rest of my faux greenery. It’s in a box somewhere…
I used some old scrapbooking paper to make these origami stars. They’re so quick and easy (once you get the hang of it) but look so effective. I’ve been making them into garlands for family and friends. Full tutorial here. My Scandi santa I’ve had for years and the gold vase was a gift.
Yes, that is my gold pineapple candle tied with ribbon. The reindeer I gave to my sister years ago, but luckily I have some of her stuff in storage. Waste not want not!
As I said, most of the decorations I’ve used I already had. I got this fab wee polar bear planter from Marks & Spencer a few years ago. The pineapple is actually a serving platter from Homesense.
I scattered candles throughout the design to add a cosy glow. The birch-effect candle is new from Homesense with some added snowflake trim.
The white paper decorations are intended to be hung up, but they work really well here to add a sense of scale and drama to the design.
