When entering our home I think many of us face the same problem – a small hallway, or even no hallway at all. Open the front door and we’re faced with a narrow walkway, a tiny porch or just a corner of your main living space. There may be a cupboard but it’s under utilised and full of junk.
What we need is a practical, welcoming space which also offers easily accessible storage for coats and shoes (and keys and umbrellas and gloves and wellies and the 101 other things which seem to live by the front door!).
So, what’s the solution? I’ve pulled together some inspiring examples to show how some clever planning and practical storage solutions can transform even the smallest space into a welcoming and functional entryway. An under utilised cupboard can even be converted into a mini mudroom. Here are 15 of my favourite small hallways, offering ideas which won’t break the bank. Plus, my top picks to help you get started.
Making an Entryway in a Small Space
If you don’t have a hallway and your front door opens directly into your main living space, then think vertically. Add hooks and a shelf to an adjacent wall to create a space for daily essentials. Use a rug, panelling or colour blocking on the walls to zone the space.
If space allows add a narrow bench or footstool to act as seating.
Creating A Mini Mudroom
If you have an awkward alcove or an under-utilised junk cupboard, then consider converting it into a mini mud/boot room. Add shelves plus a bench to double as seating and storage. Consider alternative lighting solutions. Check out some of the ingenious examples below.
